December 3, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS - Columbus Crew today announced it has re-signed Eloy Room, securing the goalkeeper through the 2023 season with a Club option for 2024. The Curaçaoan international joined the Black & Gold midway through the 2019 MLS regular season and has since made 59 regular-season appearances (all starts) and registered 15 shutouts during his time in Columbus. The Crew's 2021 Defensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the 2020 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Room will continue to occupy an international roster spot.
"We are thrilled that Eloy will be part of the Columbus Crew the next two seasons," said Columbus Crew President & General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. "We signed Eloy in 2019 because of his well-established international experience and felt he would be a great addition to our defense. Since joining us, Eloy has not only performed on the field, but he has also bought into the values of the Crew to become a veteran voice and leader in the locker room. We look forward to continued success with him as our goalkeeper."
Room joined the Crew on July 5, 2019, from Dutch Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven. In his first season as the Black & Gold netminder, Room tallied one shutout in 12 regular-season matches. The 32-year-old goalkeeper appeared in 17 regular-season matches the following season, registering seven clean sheets en route to being named a 2020 MLS Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year finalist. Additionally, Room's double save against Orlando City SC on November 4 was voted the 2020 MLS Save of the Year.
In the title match, Room held Seattle Sounders FC scoreless as the Crew secured the 2020 MLS Cup with a 3-0 victory, the largest margin of victory in MLS Cup history.
In 2021, Room had 83 total saves and registered seven shutouts over the course of 30 regular-season appearances.
At the international level, Room has earned 40 caps for the Curaçao National Team, making his debut in an international friendly against Trinidad & Tobago on June 5, 2015. In 2017, he helped Curaçao to its first Caribbean Cup title, earning the Caribbean Cup Golden Glove award in the process. Room most recently started a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Panama on June 15, 2021.
The Black & Gold are set to open the 2022 MLS season by hosting Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Lower.com Field on Saturday, February 26 at 3:30 p.m. ET. Season Ticket Memberships for the first full season at Lower.com Field are now available, with the Crew also accepting Nine-Match Ticket Plan deposits.
