Colorado Ends Record Losing Streak With 100th Win at BEC

November 10, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles ended their record four-game winless streak with a 5-3 victory tonight over the Texas Brahmas. The win was also their 100th at the Budweiser Events Center. The Eagles, now in second place in the Northwest, will take on Oklahoma City (the team they lead by one win in the division) on Friday, November 16. The Eagles held the Brahmas to only six shots in the first period, but the first one they threw at Ian Keserich did plenty of damage. At 2:07, Texas forward, Scott Sheppard dropped a pass between his legs for Mark Carragher whose 45-foot shot reached the back of the net. Keserich, who reacted late to the shot, must have been screened by the grouping of players at the point. Colorado -- for a change -- stayed out of the penalty box in the opening period (106 of their 236 PIMs, or 45 percent, have come in the first), and created several scoring chances during the last of their three power plays.

Almost six minutes into the second, the Eagles appeared to tie the game as an Aaron Schneekloth shot made its way all the way from the point, through a maze of legs and sticks, and past David Cacciola. But the goal was waved off on a holding penalty by Greg Pankewicz in front of the net; he picked up another two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. Later in the period, just five seconds after their fifth power play ended, Schneekloth threw another shot on net, and this time, Riley Nelson chipped in the rebound for a 1-1 tie. Pankewicz earned the second assist on the play. The Eagles ended two periods of play with a 36-18 edge in shots.

The game opened up in the third as Riley Nelson deflected a Seth Leonard shot from the right hash marks for a power play goal and a 2-1 lead (Paul Esdale got the second assist). But less than a minute later, Texas' Scott Sheppard shot an absolute laser from the top of the right circle and over Keserich's glove to even the score again. Not to be outdone, Ed McGrane split the Brahmas defense and chipped the puck past Cacciola just 13 seconds later. Texas, however tied the game again on a five-on-three power play goal from Justin Kinnunen at 8:56.

The Eagles then went ahead for good at 15:57 when Greg Pankewicz scored on a double-deflection from Leonard and Brad Williamson on the power play. Leonard put the game away with 51 seconds left when he caused a turnover in the right wing corner, skated in front of the net and beat Cacciola on another power play. The 5-3 score gave Keserich his first professional win.
