Carroll Ties CHL Record in Mudbugs Win
November 10, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
career shutout as Bossier-Shreveport beat Austin 3-0. The Mudbugs have now won three consecutive games and improved their record to 3-5-1 on Military Appreciation Night.
Carroll had to make only 14 saves on the way to his record-tying shutout, placing him aside Rod Branch in the record books. Branch also posted 22 career shutouts in his nine seasons in the Central Hockey League with Tulsa, Topeka and Oklahoma City .
As they have all season, the Mudbugs started strong in the first period of play, dominating the puck and generating chances. Joe Ori got Bossier-Shreveport on the board on a seemingly innocent play. Ori moved into the Austin zone and drove wide against an Ice Bats defender. As he moved in close, Ori backhanded a shot just over the shoulder of Austin goalie Miroslav Kopriva for the 1-0 âBugs lead. The Mudbugs outshot the Ice Bats 22-7 in the first period.
It was more of the same in the middle frame, with the Mudbugs buzzing around the ice and going up 2-0 early in the second. This time, it was Daniel Pegoraro stick handling off the boards and right in front before feeding a pass through the crease to Ori on the back door. Ori tucked the puck into a wide open net for his second goal of the night. Later in the period, it was more âBugs offense, this time on the power play. After getting a pass from Ryan Fairbarn, Brett Smith looked into the slot where he found an open Justin Aikins. Aikins one-timed Smith's pass by Kopriva to make it 3-0 Mudbugs at the end of two periods.
Austin never could generate much offense into the third period, getting only one shot on goal despite three third-period power plays. As the time wound down, the attention shifted to Carroll, who held on for the record-tying shutout.
Bossier-Shreveport peppered Kopriva with 43 shots on the night, and converted 1-of-8 power plays, while the Ice Bats were 0-for-10 with the man advantage.
Before the game, the Mudbugs announced the signing of rookie forward Tristan Fairbarn, who was waived by the Texas Brahmas earlier this week. Tristan is the younger brother of second-year Mudbugs defenseman Ryan Fairbarn. The younger Fairbarn did suit up for Saturday night's game, playing on a line with Chris Brassard and Elias Godoy.
The âBugs will now try to make it four consecutive victories when they play host to Mississippi on Tuesday night at 7:05 for their fifth meeting with the RiverKings this season.
