Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Broomfield, Colo. - For the second straight night, Rocky Mountain Rage center Simon Watson earned a hat trick. For the second straight night, winger Scott Wray scored four or more points propelling him to first place in the league in scoring. And for the second straight night, the Rage was more than successful on the powerplay scoring five goals. Rocky Mountain skated away with a 7-2 win against the Amarillo Gorillas tonight at the Broomfield Event Center. The Rage remains unbeaten in regulation for a sixth straight game at home.
Rocky Mountain improved to 7-1-1 (15 points) for first place in the Northwest Division. Amarillo fell to 1-7-2 (4 points) for fourth place in the Southwest Division.
The Rage dominated the first period outshooting the Gorillas 15-3. The Gorillas did not get their first shot on goal of the game until a five-on-three opportunity for Amarillo at 7:27 and not before the Rage took a 1-0 lead. Rocky Mountain's Watson held the puck behind the net and found Wray out front to wrist the puck in net. Tyler Butler also assisted on the play.
In the second period, Rocky Mountain's Colt King added the second powerplay goal of the night skating down the left wing and firing in a wrist shot at 1:48. Amarillo answered back with their first goal of the game at 8:25 in the second from David Nimmo, the team's leading goal scorer with six goals this season.
Last night, Rage captain Brent Cullaton earned his 400th career assist against the Texas Brahmas. Tonight, Trevor Weisgerber reached his own milestone. At 8:48, Weisgerber got an easy shot in goal when the Rage crowded the net and Amarillo goaltender Dan McWhinney dropped his stick. It marked Weisgerber's 100th goal of his six-year professional career. Cullaton assisted on the goal.
Rocky Mountain extended their lead 4-1 at 16:52 of the second period. King and Wray crowded the net taking multiple shots on the glove side of Amarillo goaltender Dan McWhinney. The puck bounced out to the opposite side without McWhinney noticing and Simon Watson was there to put it in net on the powerplay.
Simon Watson added Rocky Mountain's fifth goal of the game in the third period on the powerplay by putting a wrist shot top shelf from between the circles. Brent Cullaton and Scott Wray assisted. Simon was not done yet though, he added his third powerplay goal of the game at 9:51 shooting from the blueline. It marked his second hat trick in two games.
Ten seconds later, Wray capped scoring for the Rage for a team leading eight goals this season. He totaled six points tonight launching him to first place in the league in scoring with 24 points in nine games.
Amarillo's Grant Selinger added a final goal with just under two minutes remaining in the game.
