Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and New Mexico Scorpions faced off against one and other Saturday night at the Santa Ana Star Center in the first contest of the season between the Southwest Division rivals. Early goals by Arizona in the first and second periods carried the road club to its third straight victory while stopping New Mexico's winning streak at three. The Sundogs' Redenbach and Leavitt kept their point streaks alive at 10 and seven games each.

While on the power play, Arizona tallied its quickest goal on the season just 48 seconds into the opening frame Saturday night to take an early 1-0 lead. Following a Jay Holladay interference call 21 seconds in, Alex Leavitt found the back of the net on passes from David Schlemko and Tyler Redenbach for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. The Scorpions evened the score five minutes later on their first power play chance of the night as Aaron MacInnis fired a one-timer from the point past Sundogs netminder Andrew Gallant. Vladimir Hartinger and Konrad Reeder collected assists on the power play goal. Through the first 20 minutes of play, Arizona held a 16-9 advantage in shots on net.

The second period looked much like the first early on as Arizona collected its second goal with the man advantage, this time 1:10 into the stanza. David Schlemko notched his first goal and second point of the night as Scorpions netminder Andrew Martin was unable to come up with the save. Forwards Mark Kolanos and Redenbach were credited with helpers on the play. At the 8:56 mark Arizona opened up a two-goal lead as Dusty Collins tallied his third of the year, deflecting a Matt Suderman shot from the point through Martin. Jon Landry also collected an assist on the Sundogs even-strength goal. New Mexico cut the Sundogs lead back to one at 11:29 of the middle period on a loose puck goal by Reeder. Michael Kolarz and Dominic Osman picked up their third and fourth assists on the year to close out scoring in the second.

Continuing to dominate in the game, Arizona held New Mexico to just four shots in the final period while tallying 13 on Scorpions netminder Martin. The Sundogs collected an insurance marker with less than a minute to play as Martin was pulled in favor of an extra offensive skater. Leavitt would find the empty net for his second of the night for the 4-2 win. Redenbach collected his third assist of the night and league-leading seventeenth on the season along with defenseman Sean Sullivan.

Gallant appeared in net for Arizona, grabbing his third straight win, stopping 21 of 23 shots. The Scorpions Martin deflected 38 of 41 shots in the 4-2 loss. Arizona faired better on the power play, finishing 2-for-8 with New Mexico converting on just one chance. With the win, Arizona holds on to the Southwest Division's top spot, one point ahead of second place Odessa.

The first and second place teams will face one and other next Thursday and Friday in Odessa, Texas. Game times are set for 6:05pm (Arizona time) but will be tape delayed until 7:00pm on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
