Clippers Defeat Indianapolis in Comeback Fashion to Open Series
June 28, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release
After the Columbus Clippers fell in a slugfest to the Louisville Bats last night, they used finesse and timely hitting to knock off the Indianapolis Indians in game one of their four-game series tonight.
The Clippers used a four-run eighth inning and a little Triple-A debut magic from Sam Haggerty to propel themselves to a 5-3 victory.
Indianapolis started the scoring in the first, putting up one against Clippers' starter Shao-Ching Chiang on a Jordan Luplow RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead.
He did the same in the third to make it 2-0, and Kevin Kramer followed with a sacrifice fly ball to extend the lead to 3-0.
Chiang settled in for the Clippers, lasting into the seventh inning before being pulled. He went six and one-third innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, while walking two and striking out four.
His team hopped on the board for the first time in the bottom of the seventh when Nellie Rodriguez stroked an opposite-field RBI double to score Drew Maggi.
Trailing 3-1, Francisco Mejia came up big for the Clippers in the eighth, drilling a solo homerun over the wall in left to pull within 3-2. Reliever Enny Romero proceeded to load the bases and walk in the game's tying run, evening things at 3-3. Sam Haggerty, making his Triple-A debut, then came to the plate and delivered a two-run single up the middle to provide the Clippers a 5-3 lead.
Ben Taylor entered in the ninth and closed things out for the Clippers, giving them a 1-0 series lead.
The teams will do battle in game two tomorrow at Huntington Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
