Mud Hens Blast Three Homers in Close Victory

June 28, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens came out victorious in the series opener against the Louisville Bats at Fifth Third Field. This 3-2 win snaps a four game losing skid for the Mud Hens.

Toledo(45-33) came with a powerful offensive attack, sending three solo shots into the seats. Mike Gerber got things started, then Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Mikie Mahtook joined suit. Jacob Robson also nailed a single and stole second in his Mud Hens debut.

The Mud Hens were threatening early after Dawel Lugo launched a double with two outs, however nothing game of that. Four of the Hens seven hits in the game were extra base hits.

Kyle Dowdy started the game strong for Toledo, setting down the first six Bats on only 19 pitches. In total, he threw six innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking a pair. His efforts were enough to get him his fourth win of the year.

It was the bottom of the second inning when Gerber hit the first homerun off of Louisville(30-45) starter Homer Bailey. Though that would not last long, as a sac fly from Phillip Ervin tied things up in the top of the third. An inning later, Joe Hudson put the Bats on top with a two out double.

After the opening run, Bailey shut the Mud Hens down for a couple innings. However, in the fifth inning, Saltalamacchia trotted around the bases to tie the game at two. One inning later, Mahtook gave Toledo their second, and final, lead of the game with a solo shot.

Those three longballs were the whole Toledo offense, but the bullpen held up to come away with a win. Daniel Stumpf was the first out of the Hen Pen, making his fourth rehab appearance. He struck out two on his way to posting a scoreless seventh inning.

The man tasked with closing the game was Victor Alcantara, who picked up a two inning save. He struck out one batter, and gave up only a hit on his way to securing a one run victory for Toledo.
