
Chiefs Swept by Red Wings in Doubleheader Thursday

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Rochester Red Wings on Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium with the Red Wings taking the first game, 2-1, and stealing the second game, 7-5. The Chiefs combined to go 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 14 runners on base between the two games.
In the first game, Rochester (38-38) scored in the top of the third inning. With Leonard Reginatto at third base and two outs, Nick Gordon singled, scoring Reginatto for a 1-0 Rochester lead.
The Red Wings added a run in the third. With two outs, Reginatto singled home Zack Granite from second base to push the Rochester advantage to 2-0.
Syracuse (32-46) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Jacob Wilson singled to begin the inning. Raudy Read then grounded into a fielder's choice where Wilson was out at second, but Read was safe at first. Matt Reynolds followed with a double, placing runners at second and third. José Marmolejos then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Read from third to cut the Rochester lead to one, 2-1.
Chiefs starting pitcher Brady Dragmire threw all seven innings for Syracuse in the first game of the doubleheader, allowing seven hits and two runs, but only one run was earned. The 25-year-old struck out four batters and walked just one.
In the second game, Rochester scored first again. Kennys Vargas led off the top of the second by crushing a pitch over the left-field wall for a solo home run that gave the Red Wings a 1-0 edge.
Syracuse tied the game in the bottom of the second. Marmolejos singled to begin the frame. Two batters later, Chris Dominguez doubled down the left-field line to put runners at second and third. After Tuffy Gosewisch was hit by a pitch, Andrew Stevenson grounded out to first base, but Marmolejos scored from third on the play to knot the game, 1-1.
The Chiefs took the lead in the third. Wilson led off with a walk. Three batters later, with two outs, Marmolejos doubled, moving Wilson to third. Yadiel Hernandez followed with a three-run home run that he hammered to left field that gave the Chiefs a 4-1 advantage.
Syracuse put another run on the board in the fourth. Gosewisch singled to lead off. Two batters later, Irving Falu walked with a wild pitch for ball four the allowed Gosewisch to move to third. Wilson followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Gosewisch for a 5-1 Chiefs lead.
The Red Wings trimmed the Chiefs advantage in the fifth. Ryan LaMarre singled and LaMonte Wade doubled, placing runners at second and third to begin the inning. Three batters later, Juan Graterol singled to left field, scoring both LaMarre and Wade to make it a 5-3 ballgame.
Rochester stole the game in the seventh. Wade led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Granite groundout to cut the Syracuse lead to one, 5-4. Gregorio Petit and Graterol both followed with singles to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Nick Gordon hit a three-run homer over the right-field fence that put the Red Wings in front, 7-5.
The Chiefs begin a three-game series with the Buffalo Bisons on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
