Clinton LumberKings News Release
Davenport, IA - It was d̮̩jÃÆàvu all over again on Tuesday as the Quad Cities River Bandits downed the Clinton LumberKings in walk-off fashion for the second straight night. In back-to-back games, Clinton led by five runs and failed to hold the lead.
Clinton continued the impressive hitting performance from the previous game. In Monday's loss, the LumberKings tallied 16 hits. They reached double digits again, putting up 13 more hits on Tuesday night.
The LumberKings touched up the River Bandits' Lance McCullers for six runs in the first four innings. The first-round pick for the Houston Astros struggled for season-highs in hits allowed and runs.
Quad Cities slowly chipped away at the Clinton 6-1 lead. Roberto Pena delivered a two-run double in the fourth, and Jesse Wierzbicki's two-run home run cut the lead to 6-5 in the fifth. After Austin Elkins lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth, the River Bandits had erased the Clinton advantage to tie the game.
Both bullpens kept the deadlock in place until the bottom of the ninth. Clinton called on Jochi Ogando to try and extend the game with runners on first and second and one out. Ogando walked the first batter he faced to load the bases for Jordan Scott.
The finish did not come without controversy. Scott hit a deep fly ball to center field, which Jabari Henry let drop. Elkins came home to score the winning run, but the LumberKings disputed the play. Clinton appealed to third and second base to challenge whether the runners had advanced on the force. Initially, the base umpire signaled out but after conferring with his crewmate and both managers, the run stood for a 7-6 River Bandits' victory.
The LumberKings conclude their five-game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits on Wednesday evening. In the series finale, Clinton turns to left-hander Tyler Pike (5-3, 2.75) while Quad Cities counters with right-hander Vincent Velasquez (6-3, 3.84). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM CT at Modern Woodmen Park.
