Peoria Chiefs News Release

Burlington, IA- The Peoria Chiefs allowed two runs, one earned, in the bottom of the first inning and never caught up, losing to the Burlington Bees 2-1 on Wednesday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 5-8 in the second half and 43-37 overall as they prepare for a five-game homestand.

The Chiefs bounced into an inning-ending double play in the first inning and saw the Bees grab an early lead in the bottom of the frame. Riley Good, the Angels 2013 14th round pick, doubled to left in his first Burlington at-bat. A throwing error by Ildemaro Vargas at shortstop put runners on the corners and Andrew Ray doubled home both runners for a 2-0 lead against Kyle Helisek. Helisek got a line drive double play and a fly out to end the inning and settle in.

Peoria got on the board in the third inning against Ryan Crowley with an unearned run of their own. Jordan Walton reached on a two-base error by first baseman Wade Hinkle and with one out he moved to third on a fly out to deep center. CJ McElroy got the Chiefs on the board with a line drive single to center field to cut the Burlington lead to 2-1.

The only other chance for the Chiefs came in the fifth inning as Walton reached on another error and was at second base with Vargas at the plate. The Chiefs shortstop hit a sinking line drive to right that looked like it would tie the game but Chevy Clarke laid out and made a fantastic diving catch to end the inning.

Helisek (6-3) allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits over seven innings. The lefty struck out six and did not issue a walk in the loss. Zach Russell threw a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
