July 3, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
BELOIT, Wis. - The Beloit Snappers soared past the Kernels 9-2 on Wednesday night at Pohlman Field. The Kernels (11-2 second half, 51-30 overall) have lost six straight to Beloit (11-2 second half, 54-29 overall).
Beloit led 3-0 after three hitters batted in the bottom of the first inning as the Snappers jumped out a three-run lead for the second-straight night. After Brett Vertigan doubled and Daniel Robertson singled, Christopher Bostick nailed a three-run home run to right-center field, putting the Kernels down three runs.
Cedar Rapids scored their only runs of the night in the third inning, cutting the Snappers advantage to 3-2. J.D. Williams doubled to start the inning and advanced to third base on a groundout. Jorge Polanco then grounded back to the Snappers pitcher Dakota Bacus. Williams broke from third on the play and got caught in a run down. Williams eventually eluded the tag of catcher Nick Rickles at home, putting the Kernels on the board. Beloit manager Ryan Christenson argued that Williams was out of the baseline but the called stood. Polanco advanced to second base on the play and then scored on Max Kepler's RBI single, making the score 3-2.
John Wooten's two-run home run in the fourth inning put the Snappers up 5-2.
Ryan Matthews added a two-out, RBI single in the sixth inning to score Wooten, extending Beloit's lead to 6-2. The Snappers added two more with two outs in the seventh inning, pushing their lead to 8-2. Bostick and Renato Nunez both came home when Matthews reached on a throwing error by Kernels shortstop Niko Goodrum.
Bostick added a RBI double in the eighth inning that scored Robertson as the Snappers jumped ahead 9-2.
Christian Powell (2-2) took the loss for the Kernels, allowing six runs and 10 hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out four and walked one. Hudson Boyd went 1.1 innings in relief, allowing two unearned runs on two hits. Caleb Brewer allowed one run in one inning of work.
Dakota Bacus (8-2) recorded the win for Beloit, allowing two runs and seven hits over five innings. Three Snappers relievers - Stu Pudenz, Kris Hall, and Tyler Vail - combined to pitch four scoreless and hitless innings, striking out 11.
The Kernels struck out a total of 15 times in the game.
