Dayton Dragons News Release
Bowling Green, Ky.-New Dragons outfielder Adam Matthews belted a grand slam home run on his first swing with the club as Dayton defeated Bowling Green 7-5 in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday night. The win gave the Dragons a split of the twin bill.
In the first game, Bowling Green's Brandon Martin delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning to bring in his team's only runs as Hot Rods edged the Dragons 2-1. Dayton finished the night at 6-8 in the second half while Bowling Green is now 9-5.
Matthews, who arrived in Bowling Green from Billings, Montana during pre-game activities, stepped to the plate for the first time as a Dragon with the bases loaded and no one out in the top of the second inning with the Dragons trailing 3-0. He drilled a 1-0 pitch over the left-center field fence for a grand slam home run, the first of the year hit by the Dragons.
In the top of the fourth, the score was tied 4-4 when Dayton's Humberto Valor doubled over the head of the center fielder with the bases loaded to drive in two runs in what became a three-run inning as the Dragons took a 7-4 lead.
The Dragons continued to lead 7-4 going to the bottom of the seventh of a scheduled seven-inning game. Dragons reliever Kyle McMyne allowed a walk and two hits in the inning as Bowling Green scored one run and had runners at first and third with two outs. Tyler Goeddel, representing the potential winning run, hit a deep drive to right field that was caught by Matthews on the warning track to end the game.
Alejandro Chacin (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano battled after allowing a three-run first inning to give the club four innings of work, allowing four runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
The Dragons collected 10 hits in game two. Matthews, Beau Amaral, and Daniel Pigott each had two.
In the first game, the Dragons got their only run in the third when they took a 1-0 lead. Joe Hudson doubled down the left field line to start the inning, went to third on a sacrifice by Valor, and scored on Amaral's RBI ground out to first base. The Dragons collected just four hits. Hudson and Pigott had doubles.
The series moves to Dayton starting Thursday at Fifth Third Field at 7:05 p.m. Ismael Guillon (4-6, 5.94) will start for Dayton against Bowling Green's Dylan Floro (7-2, 2.03). The night will feature a post-game fireworks show. For lawn tickets, call (937) 228-2287 or purchase on-line at daytondragons.com.
