Spokane Chiefs News Release
With the U.S. division and number one seed on the line for the Everett Silvertips, the Spokane Chiefs played spoiler with a 3-2 win in the season finale for both teams.
Spokane got on the board first at 12:20 of the first period with a power play goal, Tyler Johnson's 36th goal of the year. Johnson deflected the puck out of the air just past Everett goalie Thomas Heemskerk. Brady Brassart and Stefan Ulmer assisted on the play. Spokane would go on to out shoot the Silvertips 10-9 in the period.
In a period that saw only a combined eight shots from both teams, Everett would go on to tie the game at one just moments after Brendan Kichton's hooking penalty. Kellan Tochkin would slide a rebound past the outstretched pad of James Reid for his 27th goal of the year at the 6:08 mark. Everett's lead was short lived however as Jared Spurgeon, playing in his last regular season game in a Chiefs sweater, would give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead at 8:12. Everett's Tyler Maxwell tied the game at 2 as teammate Radko Gudas flipped the puck in the air past the Spokane defense for a breakaway goal at 16:55.
In the third period Mitch Holmberg's unassisted goal at 9:27 would prove to be the eventual game winner, as the Chiefs outshot the Tips 13-8 in the period and 26-21 for the game.
Spokane finished 2-5 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill.
With the win the Chiefs finished 45-22-3-2 on the season, earning the fourth seed in the Western Conference and home ice in the first round.
The Chiefs will open the playoffs on the road against the fifth seeded Portland Winterhawks. The first two games of the best of seven will be played at Portland's Rose Garden Saturday March 20th and Sunday March 21st.
The Chiefs will return home for games three, four and five (if necessary) on Wednesday, March 24th, Friday March 26th and Saturday, March 27th.
Should there be a game six the two teams will travel back to Portland Monday, March 29th. Game seven would be held in Spokane Wednesday, March 31st.
Tickets for the playoffs are available on Monday morning at 9:00 by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
