Everett Silvertips News Release
Spokane, WA - The Everett Silvertips were unable to pick-up a point Sunday night against the Spokane Chiefs taking a 3-2 loss at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Tyler Maxwell and Kellan Tochkin scored for the Silvertips while Thomas Heemskerk made 23 saves in a strong effort. The Silvertips finish the season with a record of 46-21-3-2, second best in the Western Conference, and will face off against the Kelowna Rockets in the first round of the WHL playoffs starting this Friday at Comcast Arena.
Tyler Johnson got Spokane on the scoreboard first Sunday night at 12:20 on the power play. Collecting his 36th goal of the season, Johnson deflected a Brady Brassart shot from the right circle past Heemskerk top shelf for a 1-0 Chiefs lead. Spokane outshot Everett 10-9 after 20 minutes of play.
The Silvertips tied the game at 6:08 of the second period. Tochkin picked up his 28th goal of the season after Chris Langkow found Tochkin all alone in front on a wrap around pass before beating James Reid and tying the score 1-1. Spokane regained the lead at 8:12 for their second power play goal of the game. Jared Spurgeon grabbed his eighth of the year after a Johnson shot from the left circle missed wide and rebounded off the end boards to Spurgeon on the backdoor for a 2-1 Spokane lead. Maxwell tied the game 2-2 with his 33rd goal of the year. Radko Gudas lifted the puck from deep in the Everett zone to a speeding Maxwell who grabbed the puck at the Spokane blue line and beat Reid on his backhand on a breakaway.
Mitch Holmberg took back the lead for the Chiefs at 9:47 of the third period. Holmberg picked up the puck off a missed clearing attempt from Everett before beating Heemskerk glove side on a wrist shot. Heemskerk was pulled twice with under two minutes left for an extra attacker but Everett was unable to find the back of the net as Spokane held on to a 3-2 victory.
Everett finishes the 2009-2010 WHL regular season with a record of 46-21-3-2 with 97 points in 72 games played. Everett finishes their regular season tomorrow night in Spokane for a 6:00 pm puck drop against the Chiefs.
