Syracuse Mets News Release

Allentown, PA - The Syracuse Chiefs came from three runs down to beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 5-4, Monday night at Coca-Cola Park. Despite being out-hit by seven in the game, the Chiefs came back from a 3-0 deficit through five to clip the IronPigs. Brian Goodwin's RBI single in the ninth inning provided the winning margin. The victory snapped Syracuse's four-game losing streak and, coupled with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester losses, returned the Chiefs to sole possession of first place in the I.L. North division.

Lehigh Valley (19-18) took an early lead in the second inning. In his first Triple-A at-bat after being optioned from Philadelphia, Darin Ruf homered over the right-field wall against Austin Voth for a 1-0 lead.

The IronPigs added two more runs over the next two innings. In the third, Taylor Featherston tripled and scored on a wild pitch to stretch the advantage to two. In the fourth, Carlos Alonso singled with one out and stole second with two outs. Cedric Hunter followed with an RBI single to right to extend the lead to 3-0.

Syracuse (20-16) finally solved Mark Appel in the sixth. After tallying just one hit through the first five innings, Trea Turner singled to start the sixth. Appel then walked Brian Goodwin and Matt den Dekker to load the bases with no outs. After Scott Sizemore popped out, Matt Skole dropped a single to left-center field to score Turner. Williams bobbled the ball in center, allowing Goodwin to score and den Dekker to advance to third on the error to cut the deficit to one. Jason Martinson followed with a groundout to short, scoring den Dekker and tying the game.

The IronPigs got back on the board in the bottom of the frame thanks to a stroke of luck. Cam Perkins reached base with one out against Matt Grace on a pinch-hit bunt single. Hunter then singled to put runners on first and third. Featherston then hit a taylor-made double-play ground ball to short. However, the ball hit right on the lip of the infield grass and hopped up over Turner and into left field, allowing Perkins to score and give Lehigh Valley the lead back at 4-3.

The Chiefs answered right back in the top of the seventh. Turner tripled off the wall in center to start the inning against Severino Gonzalez. The Syracuse shortstop scored on Goodwin's groundout to second to square the game at four.

Syracuse finished off the impressive comeback in the ninth. Tony Campana pinch-hit and singled to start the inning against Edward Mujica. Turner then moved Campana to second with a sacrifice bunt. Campana scored on Goodwin's RBI single just past Sweeney at second to give the Chiefs a 5-4 lead. Rafael Martin retired the IronPigs in order in the ninth to preserve the win.

The Chiefs return to Coca-Cola Park for game two of this three-game set Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Aaron Laffey is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Alec Asher for Lehigh Valley.
