Wright Fires Complete Game, RailRiders Fall
May 16, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Louisville, Ky. - Weary after a lengthy bus ride that did not see the team arrive in its hotel rooms until after 5 a.m., the SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) dropped their road-trip opener to the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati Reds) on Monday night, 4-1. The RailRiders (21-18) lost a four-game winning streak as the Bats (21-16) got nine innings from Triple-A greenhorn Daniel Wright.
SWB struck first with its lone run crossing in the second inning. Rob Refsnyder ignited the frame with a just-fair double hammered down the third-base line. Nick Swisher then singled to right, but the ball bounded past Kyle Waldrop's errant fielding attempt, giving Refsnyder the plate and Swisher second base.
That would prove the lone run allowed by Wright. In his second career Triple-A start, the 25-year-old Wright (1-0) gave up the one unearned run on three hits, no walks and eight strikeouts. It marked his first career complete game, one that saw him face one over the minimum after the Swisher second-inning single.
Louisville's runs came on a Waldrop bloop two-out single in the second inning, a two-out, two-run double by Scott Schebler in the third and Steve Selksy's run-scoring groundout in the fifth.
Wright's counterpart, Richard Bleier, gave the RailRiders seven innings before an ejection. In the seventh, with a man at second and one out, Jermaine Curtis grounded the ball to short. Pete Kozma made an impressive off-balance glove and threw the ball to first where Swisher came off the bag and appeared to tag Curtis for the second out of the inning. Curtis was ruled safe, a call upheld after SWB manager Al Pedrique requested a conference from the umpiring crew.
The next pitch was bounced by Jesse Winker into an inning-ending double play, but before Bleier was in the dugout he had been tossed from the game.
Kozma was ejected after a strikeout looking to end the next half-inning.
The series continues at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night at Louisville Slugger Field. Right-hander Brady Lail (1-0, 3.72) gets the ball for SWB against fellow righty A.J. Morris (0-1, 3.38)
The RailRiders return home for a short three-game series and homestand against Louisville on Tuesday, May 24 at 6:35 p.m. The $2 Twosday features $2 lawn seats (walk-up only), $2 tacos and $2 tall boy beers. OFF THE RAILS:
Rain fell at the game's start, conclusion and for a good portion of the 1:59 in between.
It marked the fastest game for the RailRiders all season.
Wright threw 103 pitches (66 strikes). He had not thrown more than 73 pitches in an outing on the season.
Kyle Waldrop's error was his fourth of the year, the most among IL outfielders.
Pete Kozma's throw on Jermaine Curtis' seventh-inning contact was originally scored a throwing error. After the game, the play was changed to an infield single.
