Peoria Chiefs News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs' offense finally collected their share of hits but failed to convert on numerous chances in an 8-4 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels Wednesday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 3-4 on their season-opening nine-game road trip.
Cedar Rapids jumped on Chiefs starter Jeff Antigua in the bottom of the first. Matt Long and Jean Segura collected singles with one out, and Luis Jimenez made it 1-0 with a base-hit to left.
Peoria came right back against top prospect Fabio Martinez in the top of the second. Justin Bour tripled past a diving Mike Trout in centerfield and scored on Jovan Rosa's groundout to second. The RBI was Rosa's first of the season but 114th in his Chiefs career.
The game stayed 1-1 into the fourth as the Chiefs left a runner at third in the second, a runner at third in the third and runners on first and second in the fourth. Cedar Rapids broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth as Eric Oliver singled home Jimenez for a 2-1 lead.
The Chiefs quickly loaded the bases against Martinez in the third as Logan Watkins and Matt Cerda drew walks and Greg Rohan singled to right. Martinez recovered to strike out Bour and Rosa was retired on a fine play by Adam Younger at short to leave the bases loaded.
After the Kernels loaded the bases and failed to score in the bottom of the fifth the Chiefs responded with a two-out rally in the sixth to tie the game. Alvaro Ramirez got into scoring position with a hustle double off Kyle Hurst and Hak-Ju Lee tied the game with a double to center. But again the Chiefs left a runner in scoring position as Hurst struck out Watkins to end the inning.
Cedar Rapids used some wildness by reliever Andres Quezada to take the lead for good in the sixth. Relieving Antigua, Quezada walked two batters in a row with one out and Trout made it 4-2 with a single back up the middle. After the Chiefs went quietly in the seventh, Cedar Rapids extended their lead against Steven Grife. Segura walked and stole second before Carlos Ramirez singled to left. Jimenez doubled home Segura for a 5-2 lead and Oliver made it 6-2 with a sac fly to left before Grife got out of the inning.
The Chiefs got back into the game and threatened to tie the Kernels in the eighth. Richard Jones led off with a single against Buddy Boshers and Jesus Morelli followed with a single. Ramirez singled to load the bases and Lee drove home a run with a fielders' choice to make it 6-3. A bunt single by Watkins reloaded the bases and Cerda drew a walk to score Morelli and cut the deficit to 6-4. With the tying run on second, Johnny Hellweg relieved Boshers and induced Rohan into a 4-3 double play to end the inning and keep the Chiefs down two.
Cedar Rapids put the game away in the eighth with two runs against reliever Corey Martin. Trout singled, stole second and scored on a fielders' choice off the bat of Ramirez. Cedar Rapids made it 8-4 when Randal Grichuk doubled to left-center to score Long.
Antigua allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over dive innings in a no-decision. Quezada (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs on two walks and a hit over one inning while Grife allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in one inning. Martin allowed the final two runs on three hits over one inning.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Hak-Ju Lee (SS) - Lee collected two RBI while going 2-for-5 with a double and a stolen base.
