Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (April 14, 2010) - Gerard Hall notched a three-hit game, Wil Myers launched his first home run, and Kelvin Herrera became the first starting pitcher to get into the win column as the Burlington Bees picked up a thrilling 8-6 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday night at Community Field.
Wisconsin's Chris Dennis blasted a two-run home run in the top of the first, but the lead was short-lived as the Bees jumped all over Wisconsin starter Del Howell (L, 0-1) for five first-inning runs. Hall's three-run double was the big blow, with Ryan Stovall and Allen Caldwell picking up RBI knocks as well.
The home team went right back to work in the second as Myers lifted a fly ball over the left-center field fence and Hall picked up a second run-scoring double after a Joey Lewis single to give the Bees a 7-2 advantage.
The game remained in doubt when Wisconsin pushed across two runs in the seventh on a Chris Dennis RBI single and two more in the eighth when Austin Stockfisch singled home a run and later scored on a passed ball to bring the Rattlers within one. The Bees were able to push the lead back to two, though, in the bottom of the eighth when Hilton Richardson scored on a Myers sacrifice fly after reaching on an error by Wisconsin shortstop Michael Marseco.
Reliever Michael Lehmann (S, 1) worked a one-two-three ninth inning to pick up the save and seal the victory for Burlington.
Herrera (W, 1-0), like starter John Lamb yesterday, showed markedly improved control in his second start of the season. The Dominican righty worked five innings, holding Wisconsin to two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
The Bees and Rattlers square off in game two of the series tomorrow night on Thirsty Thursday presented by the Mark Warth Agency. Arrive early to take advantage of one-dollar draws of Miller Lite and Bud Light while they last. First pitch will be at 6:30, and the Casebine Community Credit Union Pregame Show gets under way at 6:10 on News Radio 1490 KBUR.
