Hawks Can't Capitalize, Fall To 0-7

South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Midland, MI - The South Bend Silver Hawks stranded 12 runners on base Wednesday night, falling to the Great Lakes Loons 2-1 at Dow Diamond. With the loss, the Silver Hawks drop to 0-7 on the season, the only winless team in the Midwest League.
Last week, Loons starter Brett Wallach (ND) held the Silver Hawks without a hit or run for five innings in earning the victory. South Bend made sure that wouldn't happen this time around, jumping on Wallach for an unearned run in the top of the first. Chris Owings walked, went to second on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on Bobby Borchering's double for the early 1-0 lead.
The Loons responded immediately, tying the game with a run in the bottom of the first against South Bend starter Charles Brewer (LP. 0-2). With one out, Christian Lara singled, stole second base, and scored on a double from Brian Cavazos-Galvez to knot the game at 1-1.
The Loons scored again in the bottom of the sixth to take their first lead of the game. Cavazos-Galvez led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Jerry Sands followed with a single to center, scoring the run for the 2-1 lead.
The Silver Hawks were not without opportunities throughout the game, but they just could not capitalize. South Bend had bases loaded with one out in the second, two on with one out in the fourth, two on with one out in the seventh, and two on with one out in the eighth, failing to score all four times.
Then, in the ninth, Victor Estevez doubled to start the inning and Ender Inciarte followed with a walk. However, Keon Broxton struck out and Chris Owings flew out to right, putting runners at the corners with two outs. After David Nick was hit by a pitch, Borchering broke his bat on a pop up to third, ending the threat and the game.
Justin Miller (WP, 1-0) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Loons to earn the win, with Steve Smith (SV, 1) getting the final four outs for his first save of the season.
The Silver Hawks and Loons continue the three game series Thursday evening at 6:05 PM Eastern Time. Silver Hawks RHP Eric Smith (0-1, 3.60 ERA) will get the ball against Great Lakes RHP Matt Magill (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
