
Chiefs make it three straight over Clinton with 3-1 win

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs won their third straight against Clinton and made it five straight wins overall with a 3-1 victory over the Clinton LumberKings Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. Trailing for the first time in the series, the Chiefs tied it in the sixth and went ahead when Jesus Valdez connected on his fourth home run of the season.
Down 1-0 in the sixth, the Chiefs finally found some offense. Davy Gregg led off with an infield single and stole second. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Robinson Chirinos, who reached on a throwing error by reliever Kevin Altman. Peoria tied it on a double play ground ball off the bat of Mark Reed that scored Gregg. Jesus Valdez gave the Chiefs their first lead, a lead that would stand up the rest of the way, when he rocketed a solo homer down the line in left to make it a 2-1 game.
Peoria added an insurance run in the seventh. Yusuf Carter walked and moved up to second on a fielder's choice and an error also allowing Alberto Garcia to reach base. After Dylan Johnston walked, Davy Gregg came through with a sacrifice fly to center to score Carter and give the Chiefs a 3-1 advantage.
After not leading at all in the first two games of the series, Clinton scored their only run of the game and jumped on top of the Chiefs 1-0 in the fifth. Jose Vallejo doubled to start it and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Terry Blunt walked and John Mayberry delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to score Vallejo.
Scott Taylor evened his record out at 4-4 with a win going six innings allowing just one run on six hits. Justin Rayborn pitched two flawless innings, and Matt Avery earned his sixth save of the year. Clinton starter Julian Cordero, in his first start of the season, pitched five scoreless innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Kevin Altman suffered the loss allowing two runs in one inning of work.

Jesus Valdez (RF) - The Chiefs' outfielder had two of the five Peoria hits including his fourth homer of the season. Notes... The Chiefs have now held a five-game winning streak three times this year...Taylor has gone at least six innings in six of his last seven starts...Attendance Wednesday night was 1,992...
