Cougars Offense Quiet in Loss

Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - After scoring 12 times on 18 hits Tuesday night, the Kane County Cougars were quiet Wednesday afternoon in a 4-1 loss to the Dayton Dragons in front of 6,502 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Isaac Omura's solo home run provided the home team's lone tally, and Vince Mazzaro suffered defeat from six innings of work but struck out a season-high eight batters.

Most of the Dragons' offensive output against Mazzaro arrived in the fourth inning, as they put together three runs on four hits, including consecutive two-out, run-producing connections by Bradley Key and Chris Denove. Mazzaro, who fanned seven Dayton players when he faced them in April, posted the eight strikeouts while walking one and scattering seven hits. Dragons starter Daniel Guerrero blanked the Cougars through five innings and allowed only a single to Omura.

Reliever Joel Posey tossed a perfect seventh and allowed an eighth-inning run for a 4-0 count before third baseman Jeff Baisley turned a double play to end a bases-loaded threat. The momentum continued in the bottom half from Omura's first home run as a Cougar and the second of his professional career, but the 4-1 score remained.

Mazzaro (7-6) took the loss, Guerrero (1-1) got the win and Bo Lanier notched his fifth save and first since blowing one Monday night. The Cougars (8-6) hope to win the series Thursday night at 7 CDT when Ron Madej (2-2, 3.52) faces left-hander Travis Wood (6-1, 3.82) of the Dragons (7-7).
