Cedar Rapids improved to 8-6 in the second half while the Bees fell to 4-10.

The Kernels trailed 3-2 heading to the ninth as Hainley Statin singled and moved to second on a Jordan Renz groundout. Statia scored as Larry Infante laced a double to left center to tie the game at 3. Burlington elected to walk Mark Trumbo to set up the double play with one out. Brett Martinez smacked a single into left field, scoring Infante from second as the crowd of 2,027 roared their approval.

The Kernels have struggled in close games and improved their record to 13-20 in one-run games. In fact, the Kernels had been 1-29 when trailing after eight innings.

The late inning heroics overshadowed a quality start by Robert Mosebach as he pitched eight inning and allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five. His counterpart, Burlington starter Chris Nicoll, had no hit the Kernels for the first six innings. Both starters received a no-decision for their efforts.

The Bees took an early 1-0 lead as Jeff Howell launched a solo home run over the Randy Kuehl Honfidence Pavilion in the fourth inning.

The Kernels scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. The first on a double steal attempt as Statia stole second and Josh Davies scored as the throw from home sailed into center field. The Kernels took a 2-1 lead as another Bee error let Statia score from second.

Burlington tied the game in the eighth as Chris McConnell singled and scored on a Jose Duarte double when right fielder Stantrel Smith had troubled handling the ball in the right field corner. Smith was charged with an error and Duarte moved up to third.

The Bees took the lead in the top of the ninth off reliever Ryan Aldridge as Mario Lisson laced an 0-2 pitch down the left field line for a double and advanced to third as Aldridge uncorked a wild pitch. With the infield in, Jeff Howell hit a sharp ground ball that Statia managed to knock down and throw Howell out at first as Lisson scored from third.

Burlington relief pitcher Kraig Schambough (2-3) who had Kernels baffled in their previous encounters, was tagged with the loss as Ryan Aldridge (2-3) picked up the win.

The Kernels go for the sweep on Thursday as Tommy Mendoza (5-5) starts for the Kernels and Erik Cordier makes his first start for the Bees. It's a 100.7 The Fox Buck-A-Cup Thursday as 12 ounce draft beer and soda and slushies are just a buck and bottled soda and water are two bucks all game. Gates open at 6 pm with first pitch schedule for 7 o'clock.
