Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities set season highs for runs in an inning and runs in a game Wednesday night, crossing the plate 10 times during a second-inning rally that sparked the home team to a 14-6 rout of the Fort Wayne Wizards at John O'Donnell Stadium. The Swing used eight hits and three Wizards' errors to put up the double-digit run total in the bottom of the second, sending 14 men to the plate as eight different players scored runs in the frame.
Quad Cities (7-7, 41-41) has scored 31 runs on 41 hits while taking the first three games of the series, pulling back to the break-even mark on the season with Wednesday's win. Fort Wayne (6-8, 37-45) committed a season-high five errors in the ballgame, and has now lost five consecutive games.
Randy Roth popped out to start the bottom of the second inning, but that was about all that went right from the Wizards' perspective in the frame. Bryan Anderson pulled a double to right to get the rally started, coming home one batter later on Tyler Greene's two-base hit to center. Two singles, two errors, and a sacrifice fly later, Jon Jay came to the plate with a pair aboard. The Cardinals' second round pick this year promptly turned on a ball and drove it down the right field line, plating both baserunners with a triple to give the Swing a 6-0 lead. After another single and another error Greene provided the inning's exclamation point, slugging a long three-run homer to left field for his second bomb in as many nights. He was personally responsible for a double, a homer, two runs scored, and four RBI in an inning that saw 14 batters come to the plate, as the Swing scored 10 times on eight hits and three errors to take an emphatic 10-0 lead.
Quad Cities added another run in the third when Shane Robinson singled with one out. After Casey Rowlett's base hit to right skipped under the glove of right fielder Mike Baxter, Robinson was able to score all the way from first. At that point all nine members of the Swing batting order had scored a run as Quad Cities took an 11-0 lead after three.
Held without a baserunner through the first four innings, Fort Wayne battled back with a single run in the fifth and five more in the sixth. Seth Johnston and Kyle Blanks each slugged two-run shots, but the Wizards would get no closer than an 11-6 score.
The Swing then eclipsed their previous season high of 12 runs in a single game thanks to another rally in the bottom of the eighth. Rowlett singled with one out and scored all the way from first on a double to the wall in right-center from Jay. Roth singled to move Jay to third, and Anderson blooped a base knock to right to bring him home. Roth would eventually cross the plate after another Fort Wayne throwing error, giving Quad Cities three runs on the inning and a commanding 14-6 lead heading into the ninth.
Trey Hearne (6-2) picked up the win, allowing six runs - five earned - on seven hits in six innings. The 22-year-old righthander retired the first 12 batters he faced and carried a perfect game into the fifth inning, but with a lead that grew to as many as 11 runs at his back the Wizards eventually got to him in the sixth. Hearne struck out six without walking a batter, and has now won three consecutive decisions.
Jarrett Gardner (0-1) was tagged with the loss in just his second start of the season since being signed by the San Diego Padres from the Lincoln Saltdogs of the independent American Association. He was roughed up for ten runs - although only two of them were earned - on eight hits through a pair of innings without striking out a batter or issuing a walk.
Grant Varnell turned in a crucial performance for the Wizards, holding the Swing to one unearned run in five innings of work while eating up valuable innings out of the Fort Wayne bullpen.
UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will look for the sweep against the Fort Wayne Wizards on Thursday night, as LHP Tyler Norrick (0-1, 5.19) takes the hill opposite LHP Fabian Jimenez (5-5, 4.54). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 will begin at 6:45 p.m.
