Burlington Bees News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA (July 5, 2006) With runners on first and second and one out, Brett Martinez grounded a base hit into left field to drive in Larry Infante with the winning run to lift the Cedar Rapids Kernels (8-6, 39-45) to a 4-3 win over the Burlington Bees (4-10, 39-42) at Veterans Memorial Stadium tonight. The Kernels have taken the first three games of this series to extend the Bees losing streak to five. The season series between these two clubs is now tied 5-5.
The game started as a great pitchers duel between the starters: Chris Nicoll for the Bees and Robert Mosebach of the Kernels. Nicoll held the Kernels without a hit through six innings and faced just one over the minimum after an error with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Mosebach limited the Bees to one run on three hits through seven innings. The Bees got on the board on a solo home run by Jeff Howell in the top of the fourth. The Bees have a home run in six of their last seven games.
In the bottom of the seventh, Josh Davies broke up the no-hitter with a bouncing ball down the left field line that went for a double. Hainley Statia followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. With Jordan Renz at the plate, Statia took off to steal second and when Brady Everetts throw sailed into centerfield for an error, Davies came in to score. Renz then hit a grounder to third, but Mario Lissons throw sailed over first and into the bullpen allowing Statia to score and Renz to go to second. Just like that, the Kernels led 2-1. Nicoll came out and Kraig Schambough came in and got out of the inning on a bunt and two groundouts.
The Bees came back to tie the game in the eighth. With one out, Chris McConnell singled and with two outs scored all the way from first on a double by Jose Duarte into the right field corner. Stantrel Smith misplayed the ball in right and was charged with an error as Duarte got to third. Mosebach got out of the inning by striking out Josh Johnson. Schambough pitched a scoreless eighth and the Bees took the lead back against Ryan Aldridge in the ninth. Lisson led off with a double down the left field line, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Statia had to make a diving stop on a bouncing ball up the middle off the bat of Howell for his second RBI of the ballgame.
Schambough came back out for the bottom of the ninth and Statia opened the inning with a broken bat single to center. He moved to second on a slow groundout by Renz and scored to tie the game when Larry Infante doubled off the wall in left. After an intentional walk to Mark Trumbo, Martinez rolled a single just out of the reach of Lisson and into left and Infante beat the throw to the plate to win the game. Schambough (2-3) got the loss and Aldridge (2-3) picked up the win.
The Bees and Kernels wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RH Erik Cordier will make his Bees debut on the mound after coming up from short-season Idaho Falls against RH Tommy Mendoza (5-5, 4.32) for the Kernels. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
