Dayton Dragons News Release
Geneva, IL - The Dayton Dragons (7-7, 42-42) needed a win on Wednesday afternoon in the third game of the series with the Kane County Cougars (8-6, 48-35) to try and salvage a four game split of the series with the Cougars and an eight game split of the road trip. Dayton got the necessary win on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over the Cougars, to keep the potential splits in tact. The win for the Dragons at Elfstrom Stadium was the first for the team since 2004 and snapped a streak of nine straight road losses to Kane County.
Daniel Guerrero (WP, 1-1) made his second start in a Dragons uniform on Wednesday against the Midwest League's top scoring team in Kane County. In his first start on June 29th at Cedar Rapids, Guerrero did not last long, tossing 2.0 innings and giving up five hits and five runs before being removed from the game. The right hander was much improved in his second outing lasting 5.0 innings and allowing no runs on just one hit. The right hander struck out four and walked three on the afternoon.
Guerrero and Kane County starter Vince Mazzaro (LP, 7-6) were locked in a pitcher's duel heading into the top of the fourth inning. Through 3.0 innings, the Cougars had just one hit off Guerrero, while Mazarro have given up just two hits to the Dragons. That would change in the fourth as Dayton came up with four hits in the inning to score three runs. Jay Bruce led off the inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to eight games. A stolen base by Bruce moved him to second. Mike Griffin drove home Bruce with an RBI single to left center for a 1-0 lead. With two down, Griffin scored all the way from first on Bradley Key's double to the right field corner. Chris Denove knocked in the third run of the inning with a single to right center scoring Key and the Dragons led 3-0.
Kane County's best chance to get a run across the plate came in the bottom of the sixth inning against Russell Haltiwanger (ND) who replaced Guerrero. The right hander got the first two outs of the inning on fly balls before giving up a two out single to Anthony Recker. An infield single by Jeff Bailsey turned into a two base play when shortstop Eric Eymann threw wildly to first base advancing Recker to third and Baisley to second. A Haltiwanger walk to Jose Pineda loaded the bases for Chad Boyd. Haltiwanger got Boyd to hit a come backer to the mound to end the threat.
Dayton and Kane County traded runs in the eighth inning as the Dragons briefly took a 4-0 lead and the Cougars averted being shutout. Griffin picked up his second run batted in on the afternoon. Bruce walked and moved to third on a hit and run single by Hernandez. Griffin's single to center scored Bruce and the Dragons led 4-0. Kane County got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer off Haltiwanger by Isaac Omura.
Bo Lanier (SV, 5) rebounded from a rough outing on Monday night in the opening game of the series to pick up the save on Wednesday. Lanier pitched a one, two, three, ninth inning to save the win for Guerrero.
The Dragons wrap up the four game series at Kane County Thursday night with an 8:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry all the action from Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, Illinois live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 7:30 PM. LHP Travis Wood (6-1, 3.82 ERA) will make the start for Dayton, while the Cougars counter with RHP Ron Madej (2-2, 3.52 ERA).
