Chiefs Hit, Pitch Way Past South Bend

South Bend, IN - Starter Donnie Veal struck out nine while the Chiefs offense racked up 15 hits in a 5-1 Mother's Day win over the South Bend Silver Hawks. With the win the Chiefs move to 20-16 on the first half and into a momentary tie for first place pending Kane County's Sunday doubleheader at Beloit.

After falling behind 1-0 in the 1st inning, Veal shut down the Silver Hawks through 5 2/3 innings. He didn't give up a hit from the 2nd inning until there were two outs in the 6th. South Bend used a walk and stolen base from Justin Upton to produce a run in their first at-bat. Veal struck out the side in the 2nd inning and tied a season high with nine punchouts.

The Chiefs left runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings before breaking through in the 4th against South Bend left-hander Ryan Schreppel. Mark Reed drew a leadoff walk and scored without a throw when Brandon Taylor doubled to the wall in left-center. The Chiefs left Taylor in scoring position and the game moved into the 5th tied 1-1.

In the 6th inning, Reed led off with a double to right and moved to third on Taylor's single to center. With nobody out, Reed came home when Alberto Garcia bounced into a double play as the Chiefs took a 2-1 lead.

The Chiefs took some breathing room in the 7th inning when Ryan Norwood and Reed collected back to back RBI singles for a 4-1 lead. The offense put the finishing touches on a 15-hit performance in the 8th inning when Jonathon Mota's fourth hit of the contest scored Matt Ciaramella for a 5-1 advantage.

Veal (3-2) picked up the win while Matt Avery tossed 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Scott Koerber threw a 1-2-3 9th inning in a non-save situation as the Chiefs picked up the win.

Pepsi Co-Players of the Game

Jonathon Mota (SS) & Donnie Veal (SP) - Mota, starting for the injured Dylan Johnston, doubled in the 1st and singled three times to raise his average to .351 on the season. Veal picked up his 3rd win of he season with nine strikeouts, three walks and three hits while allowing one run in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Notes...The Chiefs are 3-3 on the roadtrip heading into Monday's finale...Valdez has hit safely in 13 straight road games and 7 straight overall...Veal is 2nd in the Cubs minor league system in strikeouts with 49 and 3rd in the Midwest League...Every position in the Chiefs lineup had at least one hit...Dylan Johnston (left thumb), Kevin Collins (quad) & Davy Gregg (flu) all missed he game while Kyle Reynolds left in the 3rd inning with dry eyes...Mark Reed played third base for the first time in his pro career and handled all three groundballs hit his way...RH Scott Taylor (1-1) faces RH Eddie Baeza (3-2) Monday at 5:30 PM Central Time...The broadcast begins with the pre-game show on www.peoriachiefs.com at 5:15 PM.
