Adenhart Bests Poveda in Pitcher's Duel
May 14, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Righthander Nick Adenhart continued an impressive season, allowing just one run on seven hits through seven innings as the Cedar Rapids Kernels beat the Clinton LumberKings, 2-1. Adenhart and L-Kings starter Omar Poveda battled throughout the afternoon, but a two-run double by Kernels left-fielder Warner Madrigal proved to be the difference.
Adenhart (W, 6-0) struck out eight batters while walking none in getting his league-leading sixth victory. The lone run to score on him came in the bottom of the fifth, as Matt Smith smacked a triple to the deepest part of the ballpark in right-center and scored a batter later on a wild pitch.
The LumberKings could get nothing going otherwise against Adenhart and relievers Tim Didjurgis and Ryan Aldridge. Aldridge did not allow a hit in 1 1/3 innings to pick up his sixth save of the year.
Poveda (L, 0-4) took the hard-luck loss for Clinton, allowing just two runs on five hits through six innings. He struck out a season-high eight batters while walking just two. The only damage came on Madrigal's two-out double off the left field wall that scored Dallas Morris and Mark Trumbo. L-Kings reliever Julian Cordero worked a scoreless three innings, allowing just two hits.
The loss ends a two-game winning streak for the LumberKings and drops their record to 12-24. The Kernels improve to 18-19 on the season, amidst the middle of the pack in the Midwest League West.
The teams finish a four-game series tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, game time set for 6:00 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or stream the game live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
