LANSING - Rain forced the start of Sunday's game back by an hour and six minutes, but the wait was well worth it for Lansing, as the Lugnuts topped the West Michigan Whitecaps 3-1 before 1,617 fans at Oldsmobile Park. The win puts Lansing 1/2 game ahead of the rival Whitecaps in the Eastern Division.

The story of the day was Lansing's bullpen. Four pitchers combined to shut down the Whitecaps, holding the visitors to just one run while scattering eight hits.

Aaron Tressler tossed 4 2/3 innings in a spot start, allowing the only run to West Michigan. It came in the fifth when William Rhymes scored on an infield single by Mike Holliman to make the score 1-0.

Lansing fought back in the bottom of the inning when Anthony Hatch tripled to right-center field. After Jesus Gonzalez walked, Sean Shoffit grouded out to score Hatch and move Gonzalez to second. The groundout made the score 1-1. Gonzalez then swiped third base and came home on a Brian Bormaster infield single to push the lead to 2-1.

The Lugnuts added one more run in the eighth when Cory Patton singled to left to plate Gonzalez and make the score 3-1.

Joey McLaughlin picked up the win in relief by tossing two innings and allowing just one hit.

Yesson Berroa nailed down the save by throwing the final two frames, allowing one hit while fanning five.

Lansing (23-13) and West Michigan (22-13) will complete the four game set on Monday evening at Oldsmobile Park. Chi-Hung Cheng (5-2, 3.24 ERA) will take the hill for the Lugnuts, while Burke Badenhop (3-0, 3.97 ERA) will throw for the Whitecaps. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
