Kane County Cougars News Release
Beloit, Wisc. - The Kane County Cougars grabbed the opening game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against the Beloit Snappers by winning 4-0 behind a seven-inning no-hitter from right-hander Jared Lansford. The 19-year-old right-hander walked five batters and hit one but otherwise baffled the Snappers while hurling the Cougars' fifth no-hitter in franchise history. Kane County nearly battled back in game two to sweep the home team but fell 3-2.
The Cougars gave Lansford, who flirted with a no-no two starts ago in his debut with the team, a 1-0 lead before he took the mound, scoring in the top of the first off Eddie Morlan when Frank Martinez belted a sacrifice fly to score Mike Massaro. Lansford, making his third start of the season, walked the first man he faced in the bottom half and hit a batter before settling down to get out of the jam. He worked a perfect second inning and issued one walk in each of the next three innings.
Meanwhile the Cougars took a 3-0 lead on Anthony Recker's two-run, fourth-inning double and a 4-0 advantage when Isaac Omura scored on an error in the fifth. After a 1-2-3 sixth, Lansford retired the first batter in the seventh and then issued a one-out walk. Caleb Moore proceeded to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game, and Lansford's teammates mobbed him near the mound. It marked the Cougars' third shutout victory of the season and their 20th win overall. Lansford (2-1) defeated Morlan (1-2).
Beloit took a quick 2-0 lead in game two against starter Trey Shields, but a pair of clutch hits by the Cougars fueled the offense against Oswaldo Sosa. Jeff Bieker's two-out single in the second scored Steve Kleen, who later delivered a two-out, run-scoring hit of his own in the third to drive home Martinez. The deciding run came in the Snappers' half of the fourth after a leadoff walk. Sosa (3-2) grabbed the win, Shields (2-5) suffered the loss for the fourth time in five starts and David Shinskie saved his third game.
The Cougars (20-16), tied with Peoria atop the Western Division, look to win the series against Beloit (17-18) on Monday night at 6:30 CDT. Vince Mazzaro (3-3, 6.40) will face Kyle Waldrop (2-2, 4.93).
