South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - One of the reasons the Chicago Cubs drafted Donald Veal was his control. Sunday afternoon at the Cove, Veal controlled the bats of the South Bend Silver Hawks helping the Peoria Chiefs gain a 5-1 win over the Hawks.
The Silver Hawks, who have been outscored in the first inning by a 2:1 margin (30-16) got on the board first. With two away in the opening frame, Justin Upton walked, stole second and scored Bryan Byrne's single to center field to put the Hawks up 1-0.
The Chiefs tied the game in the fourth. Mark Reed walked and was plated when Brandon Taylor doubled to left field for a 1-1 tie.
The Chiefs took the lead in the sixth. Mark Reed doubled down the right-field line and advanced to third on Brandon Taylor's single to center. A double play ground ball by Alberto Garcia scored Reed for a 2-1 Peoria lead.
Peoria extended its lead by scoring a pair of runs in the seventh and another in the eighth for their 5-1 margin of victory.
From the start of the game to the 5.2 innings, Peoria starter Donald Veal was masterful. The second round pick in the 2005 draft, struck out nine, walked three allowing one run and three hits.
Donald Veal (3-2) gets the win and Hawks starter Ryan Schreppel (1-4) suffers the loss.
