Charlotte Checkers News Release
(Greenville, SC - Friday, February 28) The Charlotte Checkers got a 30 save performance from goalie Scott Meyer and a late, third-period goal from Lucas Lawson in a 1-0 shutout win over the Greenville Grrrowl at the Bi-Lo Center Friday night. The win gives the Checkers a two-game winning streak and ended their seven-game season series with Greenville at 5-2-0. Grrrowl goalie Daniel Boisclair was the hard-luck loser with 34 saves.
The win give the Checkers 63 points and kept them tied for fourth place (the final playoff spot in the division) in the Southern Division with South Carolina, as the Stingrays kept pace with a 4-2 win over Long Beach. Charlotte also failed to gain ground on Greensboro and Florida as both also won Friday night.
Although the Checkers won the game Friday over Greenville and got the two points, Coach Derek Wilkinson was not pleased with his team's effort. "I was very disappointed in our passion and zeal tonight," remarked Wilkinson. "Maybe we thought we could come in here and go through the motions and win big but that certainly wasn't the case. If we play that way Saturday night in Greensboro we'll get blown out. It was a real goalie's battle tonight with both Meyer and Boisclair playing well."
The first two periods of the game were scoreless, with both goalies making some spectacular saves. The Grrrowl outshot the Checkers 13-10 in the first period, with Charlotte dominating period two with a 12-4 shot advantage.
Lawson's winning goal was set up by Jeff State and Mike Wirll. State forced the puck deep in the corner of the Grrrowl zone, while Wirll sent the puck out in front to Lawson who deked Boisclair and then backhanded the puck over the prone goalie for the game winner.
The Checkers increased their record to 28-21-7 for 63 points while Greenville lost its fourth in a row to fall to 10-39-5 for 25 points. Charlotte will close out its three-game road trip this week on Saturday night when it plays the Greensboro Generals at 7:30 p.m. The Checkers return to Cricket Arena ice on Friday, March 5 when they'll host the Dayton Bombers at 7:30 p.m. on "Pucks & Prayers" night.
