Gladiators bite Grrrowl, 4-2

The Gwinnett Gladiators got goals from four different players while Trevor Prior turned aside 24 shots to help the Gladiators to a 4-2 victory over the Greenville Grrrowl on Saturday night.

Kevin Doell broke a scoreless tie with 2:33 remaining in the first period slipping past a Greenville defender and firing a snapshot past goaltender Michael Robinson. Wes Swinson and Jim Jackson had the helpers as they worked to keep the puck in the zone and set up Doell on the goal.

Greenville tied the contest up at one 3:23 into the second period, as Michael Chin was able to slip down the left wing past a Gladiators defenseman and beat netminder Trevor Prior. Russell Spence and Mike Nelson added the assists on the goal.

Stacey Bauman gave the Grrrowl a 2-1 lead midway through the middle stanza when Prior lost sight of the puck and the Grrrowl forward flipped it into the open net. John Nail and Troy Ilijow picked up the helpers on the goals as they were able to find Bauman open in the slot.

Steve Slonina equalized the contest for the Gladiators with his fourth goal in the past four games for the Gladiators. Troy Milam added an assists on the play as he moved the puck up ice to Slonina who slipped past a Greenville defenseman and rolled the puck past Robinson with a one handed shot at 11:06 of the second.

Blue Bennefield regained the lead for the Gladiators picking up a rebound in the slot and smacked the puck past Robinson just 33 seconds later. Kevin Doell took the initial shot that created a rebound for Bennefield to stuff home. Wes Swinson also had an assist on the goal.

Anthony Aquino iced the contest for the Gladiators with an empty net goal with just 10 seconds remaining in the final period. Brandon Dietrich added an assist on the game's final goal.

The Gladiators went 0-for-5 on the power play while out shooting the Grrrowl 36 –26 in the win.
