Charlotte Checkers News Release

Pensacola, F.L. - The Checkers played their final game of the regular season in Pensacola and were able to come away with the victory over the Ice Pilots by a score of 4-3.

Checkers defenseman, Kenton Smith started the scoring for the Checkers in the first period as he blasted a shot from the right point that beat Ice Pilots netminder, Cam Elsworth at 3:51 putting Charlotte up, 1-0.

A controversial goal started the scoring during the middle stanza. After a discussion amongst the officials and goal judge, it was ruled that a one-timer by Pensacola's Adam Hobson indeed crossed the line behind Checkers goalie, Mike Ayers. This resulted in the tying goal at 11:41. The Checkers wouldn't let it bother them and they responded emphatically minutes later when defenseman Michael Busto skated in from the blue-line and rifled a shot over the glove of Elsworth at 13:53 giving Charlotte a 2-1 lead. Jeff Kyrzakos added another tally on a deflection off a wrist shot by Kirk Dewaele at 15:16 putting the Checkers up 3-1 after forty minutes.

In the third period, Hobson would get his second of the game on the power play beating Ayers at 3:58. This cut the Checkers lead to 3-2. Charlotte forward, Bruce Graham banged home a pass from Tom Pyatt on the power play at 9:30 helping the Checkers recapture a two goal lead. The Ice Pilots answered on the ensuing shift when Tim Songin's shot was stopped by Ayers but the rebound was sent right to Patrick Bordeleau who made no mistake scoring at 10:09. Pensacola couldn't manage to score a goal to tie it and Charlotte would win, 4-3.
