Wheeling Nailers News Release

EMIRA, NY - The Wheeling Nailers fought back to tie the game 2-2 in the final seconds of the second period only to have the Elmira Jackals pull away in the final period by scoring three unanswered goals in a 5-3 win over the Wheelng Nailers on green ice at First Arena.

The St. Patrick's Day celebration got off to an inauspicious start for the Nailers as they were called for two minor penalties within the opening 56 seconds. They managed to kill them off but couldn't get much going offensively in the opening period. The Jackals scored the lone goal of the frame at the 14:54 mark. Bobby Robins was able to pry a rebound free from Curtis Darling and slip it behind him. The puck narrowly crossed the goal line and it took minutes of deliberation between the officiating crew and the goal judge before deciding to award the goal.

In the second period, Darling was tested with not only a breakaway but a penalty shot as well stoning Pierre-Luc Faubert on both. It allowed the Nailers to tie the game 1-1 on a power-play goal from Seamus Young. Kevin Croxton's pass found Young open in the right faceoff circle and he beat Ervins Mustakovs for his ninth of the season at 12:22.

Elmira answered 40 seconds later with the first professional goal for Brian Bicek. Former Nailer Matt Johnson's shot missed the net but bounced hard off the end-boards back in front of the goal for Bicek to backhand home. The rookie was appearing in just his fourth pro game.

Just before the end of the period Aaron Clarke and Justin Chwedoruk combined for the game tying goal. Clarke went in one-on-one with Chwedoruk trailing the play. As Clarke dropped the puck to Chwedoruk he moved into position at the side of the goal to receive the pass. His 13th goal of the season came with just 8.7 seconds remaining in the period.

Maxime Boisclair was the No. 1 star of the game after adding the game winning goal to his two assists. His slapshot made its way through a screen and into the net at 3:56 of the third period. Faubert and Hendrikx added goals of their own to secure the 5-2 win for Elmira.

Darling made 36 saves in a losing effort while Mustakovs won his fourth straight start by stopping 14 shots.

Wheeling's road trip continues with a game in Trenton at 7:05pm on Thursday before returning home to take on the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday. The first 2,500 fans inside WesBanco Arena on March 22 will receive a Moondog bobblehead. Tickets are still available by calling 304-234-GOAL or by visiting www.wheelingnailers.com.
