Catters Creep Closer to History With 3-2 Win

March 17, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Texas Wildcatters News Release

Beaumont, TX--A David Schulz slap shot from the point snuck through traffic midway through the second period, providing the Texas Wildcatters with all the offense they would need to secure a 3-2 victory over the Augusta Lynx Sunday afternoon at Ford Arena.

Augusta took an early lead with a goal at 2:33 that made its way past Texas netminder Kris Tebbs, but Kevin Baker responded with his 23rd goal of the year (Benedict, Kinley) on the power play at 13:17 of the first period to tie the score 1-1.

The teams would exchange goals again before the first intermission-Augusta taking a 2-1 lead at 15:24 before Scott Chapagne would knot the score :36 seconds later (Benedict, Baker) as the teams entered the first intermission tied at two.

Unlike the first two games of the series, play would continue unimpeded by the officiating as the teams would accumulate a mere 14 combined penalty minutes on the afternoon.

Schulz' game-winning goal came on an even strength play near the game's halfway point as he took a pass from Dan Welch and blasted a knee-high slap shot that appeared to carom off a defender before finding its way behind a stymied J.P. Levasseur, Augusta's winning goalkeeper in Friday's shootout win over the South Division Champion Catters.

Tebbs would stop 26 of 28 to lead the Catters to their ECHL-leading 49th win of the season. Texas would come one step closer to the Brabham Cup-awarded to the team with the league's best regular season record-as Cincinnati would succumb to Dayton 4-2 despite three third period goals.

The Catters get back to work this weekend with their final three-games-in-three-days series Friday through Sunday in Biloxi to face the eighth-place Mississippi Sea Wolves.

With 108 standings points (49-6-3-7), the Wildcatters have already secured a place in ECHL history matching the 2003-04 San Diego Gulls and the 1999-2000 Florida Everblades for fourth-most points acquired in a season.

The 2005-06 Las Vegas Wranglers are next with 112 points. The ECHL-record is 116 points set by the 2001-02 Louisiana Ice Gators. The Wildcatters have seven remaining games-fourteen possible points-to match or best that mark.

The Wildcatters would have to win all of their remaining games to match the 56 wins registered by the 2001-02 Ice Gators, though their six regulation losses are five better than the ECHL record set by the 1995-96 Richmond Renegades.
