Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – November 16, 2002: For the second time in two weeks, the Checkers bounced back from a dismal performance to win their next game. After a 7-1 loss Friday night at Columbia, the Checkers snapped Greensboro's three-game winning streak winning 3-2 in overtime before 5,633 Saturday night at Cricket Arena. Dusty Jamieson's goal at 2:20 of overtime proved to be the game winner, his second game-winner this season. Jamieson has scored five goals in ten games since joining the Checkers three games into the season.

"Fans at Cricket Arena may not see a prettier goal the rest of the season," quoted Checkers Head Coach Don MacAdam on Jamieson's game-winning tally. "If Dusty keeps playing the way he has been, he won't be around here much longer. He's a great kid with a lot of talent." MacAdam also commented on the way the Checkers bounced back Saturday night following Friday night's clunker in Columbia. "We worked real hard tonight, and played solid hockey for 62 plus minutes against a real good Greensboro team," said MacAdam. "Niklas Sundberg (Checkers starting goalie) made the saves he had to make tonight, and the rest of the team did their part."

Greensboro scored first 2:49 into the first period as Mark Turner scored short handed, after Checkers defenseman Patrick Aufiero lost the puck while Charlotte was on a power play. The Checkers were also forced to kill off three Greensboro power play attempts in the first period, while the Generals went on the penalty kill twice. The Checkers had a narrow 14-13 edge in shots after one period.

The Checkers used two power plays to grab a 2-1 lead after two periods. Charlotte tied up the match at 7:45 as Nick Bilotto, back in the lineup after missing the last nine games, backhanded a shot from close range by Generals goalie Jamie Hodson for a 1-1 score. Kenton Smith and Kevin Caulfield assisted on Bilotto's tying goal. The Checkers took their first lead of the game at 13:19 as Takahito Suzuki tapped in a shot at the side of the Generals net on a Charlotte power play off assists from Bilotto and Vince Malts.

In the third period with the Checkers clinging to a one goal lead, Allan Egeland received questionable hooking penalty that put Greensboro on the power play. The Generals tied it up at 2-2 at the 7:37 mark as Gino Parrish beat Sundberg with the equalizer. The teams battled through the rest of regulation without any further scoring. Through three periods, the Checkers out shot the Generals 39-28. In the overtime Jamieson got the puck down low, made a few moves on Hodson before finally putting the puck behind him.

The win pulled the Checkers back to the ..500 mark at 6-6-1 for 13 points, while Greensboro earned one point in their overtime loss for an 8-4-3 mark for 19 points. Charlotte will get back to action next weekend with a pair of games at Cricket Arena. Friday night the Checkers will host the Florida Everblades and Saturday the Pee Dee Pride will pay their first visit of the season to Charlotte.

NOTES: Early on Saturday, the Checkers signed defenseman Wes Jarvis. Jarvis split time the past two seasons between the Checkers and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.....Defenseman Nick Bilotto returned to the Charlotte lineup after missing the past nine games.....defensemen Chad McIver and Ryan Murray were Charlotte's healthy scratches.
