Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates earned three of a possible six points in an overtime loss, a shutout win and a loss in the second of three straight three-in-three weekends this month. After their third overtime setback of the season, this one against Providence, the Pirates blanked Lowell before losing by a goal to Springfield. The Pirates are in fourth place in the American Hockey League's North Division with a record of 6-5-2-3. They begin their final three-in-three stretch of the month on Friday when they visit the Worcester IceCats.
LAST WEEK:
Friday, November 15, 2002: Providence 6, Pirates 5 OT
After grabbing a 1-0 lead on a first-period powerplay goal by Graham Mink, the Pirates allowed four straight goals to the Bruins to trail 4-1 midway through the third period. The Pirates began their comeback with a Mark Murphy powerplay tally and added even-strength markers from Jason Doig (first as a Pirate) and Ivan Ciernik to tie the game at four with less than three minutes remaining. The Bruins responded with a Martin Samuelsson goal with just 1:15 remaining but again the Pirates had an answer. With Sebastien Charpentier off for an extra attacker, Colin Forbes scored with less than eight seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. The Bruins got the game-winner when Zdenek Kutlak scored at 3:28, giving each team in a win in the season series.
Saturday, November 16, 2002: Pirates 3, Lowell 0
The Pirates picked up their AHL-leading third shutout of the season and second against Lowell. It was also a game for first goals. Nate Forster scored his first of the year on a first period powerplay. The Pirates maintained the 1-0 lead until the third period when Matt Pettinger earned his first goal of the year on another powerplay. Ivan Ciernik notched an empty-net goal in the final minute. Maxime Ouellet earned his first shutout of the season and first as a Pirate.
Sunday, November 17, 2002: Springfield 2, Pirates 1
The Pirates returned home to host a Springfield team that had won three of its last four games. After a scoreless first period and a nearly scoreless second, Ramzi Abid got the visitors on the board, poking home the rebound of a Peter Fabus' shot. Trent Whitfield replied for the Pirates just 48 seconds later. He converted the rebound of his own shot to tie the game at one after two. The Falcons got the game-winner in the third when Boyd Kane's deflected shot slipped by Charpentier at 9:15. Each team has now won a game in the season series with the road team winning each game.
