Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - The Checkers battled the Mississippi Sea Wolves tonight for the second time at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice this season, and lost by a score of 3-2.
After a scoreless first period, the Checkers finally got on the board when captain, Blake Bellefeuille took a nice feed from Patrick Bordeleau and buried a one-timer behind Sea Wolves netminder, Ryan Munce at 11:16. Mississippi would answer back with a power play goal after Ryan Menei picked up a rebound right in front of Checkers netminder, Curtis Darling and flipped it over the goalies glove tying the contest at 13:14. The Sea Wolves would again silence the crowd and take their first lead of the contest after defenseman, Gio Flamminio took a shot from the blueline that sailed past a screened Darling at 14:33 putting Mississippi up, 2-1. The Checkers would strike back as the Bellefeuille scored once more late in the period on the power play after he banged in a rebound on a Chris Capraro shot at 19:11.
In the final period, with both teams looking for the go-ahead marker, it was Sea Wolves forward, Radek Smolenak that picked the upper corner over the catching glove of Darling and scored what ended up being the winning goal at 8:08 as Mississippi would win by a score of 3-2.
Notes: After a fight with Brandon Elliot, Checkers forward, Kaleb Betts was given a game misconduct because his fight strap wasn't tied down...Both teams scored one power play goal despite Charlotte having twice as many tries as Mississippi with six...Darling turned aside 21 of 24 shots while Munce stopped 26 of 28...
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Dec. 7 against the Johnstown Chiefs. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
