Salmon Kings rally to force OT, sweep series

The Salmon Kings took home their third win of the series against Phoenix tonight. The final score was 5-4 for the Salmon Kings after regulation play and overtime.

The Victoria Salmon Kings looked to polish off the Phoenix Roadrunners and continue their nine game home winning streak. Wednesday night's game ended with the Salmon Kings beating the Roadrunners in overtime with Wes Goldie scoring the overtime winning goal. Last night, the two teams went to a shoot-out where Kiel McLeod landed the goal that led to Salmon Kings victory.

It was an amazing start to the finale of three games in three nights for the Salmon Kings and the Phoenix Roadrunners at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The Roadrunners were first to get on the board with a breakaway goal by Peder Skinner from Mitch Carefoot at 1:18. A Salmon Kings goal scored just seconds later set off the downpour of teddy bears. Chris St. Jacques scored his second of the season with a breakaway tally. Roadrunners shot back with a goal by Ryan Walsh. Phoenix scored again at 4:32 making the lead 3-1. The Salmon Kings notched another goal courtesy of Kevin Estrada when he blasted a shot. Assists went to by Ash Goldie and Daniel Rahimi at 10:44. Phoenix's fourth goal was scored at 13:00 on the play against Victoria's Billy Thompson. It was 4-2 Phoenix after the first period.

The second period provided no goals for either team. Phoenix retreated back into a defensive mode the Kings applied pressure, but were unable to beat Roadrunner goalie Cody Rudkowsky. After two periods the score remained 4-2 for Phoenix.

The Kings got on the board in the third period when Jordan Krestanovich scored on the power play at 16:00. With less than three minutes remaining in the third period, Ash Goldie knocked one in to tie the score at 4-4as the Kings kept up the pressure that they had maintained throughout the entire series against Phoenix. The two teams headed into overtime after sixty minutes of play.

In overtime, the Salmon Kings scored on Rudkowsky during a power play. Ash Goldie got the team's fifth goal of the night as well as the game winner. The assists went to Jordan Krestanovich and Kiel McLeod one minute into overtime. Final score Salmon Kings 5 Roadrunners 4.

Tonight's attendance was 5,810 for the largest crowd of the year. Total shots on net were 42 for the Victoria Salmon Kings and 32 for Phoenix Roadrunners. Victoria went 1/3=25% and Phoenix went 2/5=40%

The Salmon Kings return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on December 19th versus last year playoff opponent Alaska Aces. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
