South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Pensacola, FL - Andrew Gordon scored for the fourth straight game, and Josh Johnson made 33 saves as the South Carolina Stingrays finished off their four game road trip on a high note by winning their third straight game, this time over the Ice Pilots 5-2.
"I'm so proud of these guys right now," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "The guys have had to battle hard each game."
In the first period the Ice Pilots took the lead 1-0 when Mike Sgroi scored his fourth goal of the year. That would be the only goal scored in the period.
It was the second period where the Rays began to take over. They tied the game up at one on Stephen Werner's sixth goal of the season, unassisted at 6:46. After Sgroi scored his second goal of the game to re-take the lead for the Pilots, Gordon tied things up again. He scored a short handed goal, his eighth of the season, from Werner at 12:25. They would take the lead on Paul McIlveen's sixth goal of the year from Andrew Andricopolous and Steve Pinizzotto at 17:26.
In the third period the Rays extended their lead on Pinizzotto's fourth goal of the season from McIlveen at 4:38, to make it 4-2. It would eventually become 5-2 on Bryan Esner's third goal of the season from Matt Scherer and Marty Guerin at 13:58.
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 33 of 35 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Mike Brodeur who stopped 22 of 27 shots he faced. The Stingrays went 0 for 2 on the power play, while killing off 5 of 6 short handed opportunities.
"We'll now be able to head home and rest up for a while," said Bednar. "We have a number of injuries that we're working through, but this will be a good chance to get healthy."
The Rays are back in action next Friday when they travel to Augusta to take on the Lynx. Game time will be 7:05 P.M.
