COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia Inferno (8-9-2-2, 20 points) fell to the visiting Augusta Lynx (11-7-0-2, 24 points) 2-1 in overtime Saturday night. The Inferno scored the game's first goal just 40 seconds into the opening frame when Owen Fussey tapped in the rebound of an errant Tyson Marsh slap shot; Fussey and the rest of the Inferno were then showered with some 700 teddy bears in celebration of the sixth annual WMHK 89.7 FM Teddy Bear Toss. Play stopped for about five minutes as the plush toys were collected so as to be distributed by emergency personnel to help comfort children in times of crisis. The Inferno nursed the one goal lead for the rest of the game as they kept the Lynx off the board for the next 58 minutes thanks to solid goaltending from Todd Ford. However, Ford surrendered the game-tying goal at 18:59 of the third period when John Laliberte took advantage of a sprawling Ford and tucked in the loose puck, sending the game to overtime. The Lynx took advantage of the extra frame as Matt Christie wheeled in the near corner and ripped a wrister through Ford's legs from the top of the near circle. The goal served the Inferno their first loss to their cross-state rivals this season. Ford finished with 30 saves on 32 shots, while Bobby Goepfert stopped 25 of 26. The Inferno host the Johnstown Chiefs on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7:05 p.m. Season tickets, group tickets, fundraisers and the coolest birthday parties in town are all available by calling 803.256.7825 or by logging on to the all-new ColumbiaInferno.com.
