Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC â The league office of the ECHL announced today that Charlotte goaltender Alex Westlund was selected as the Reebok Hockey ECHL Saver of the Week for February 28-March 6.
Westlund won both games as the Checkers went 2-0-0 to remain in first place in the East Division of the American Conference. After making 36 saves in a 5-1 win at Atlantic City on March 4, Westlund recorded the first shutout of the season for Charlotte with 38 saves in a 3-0 win against Greenville on March 5. The Chatham, N.J. native posted a goals-against average of 0.50 and a save percentage of .987 for the week, improving to 22-13-2 with a .912 save percentage and a goals-against average of 2.82.
Undrafted by the National Hockey League, the 5-8 and 181-pound Westlund turned professional after playing four years at Yale University where he holds the career record for victories by a goaltender (42) and won the Ken Dryden Award as the Eastern College Athletic Conference's outstanding goaltender in 1998. In his sixth professional season, Westlund has spent parts of five seasons in the ECHL with Dayton, Toledo, Cincinnati, Trenton and Charlotte while also playing 14 games in the International Hockey League and American Hockey League.
Westlund was a member of the United States team that won a bronze medal at the 2004 IIHF World Championships, making 10 saves on 10 shots in 40 minutes of an 8-3 victory over Denmark.
In three games with Trenton last season, Westlund was 2-1-0 with a .935 save percentage and a goals-against average of 2.01. Westlund played 50 games for Khabarovsk Amur in Russia in 2002-03 and returned to Russia in 2003-04, playing 31 games for Kabarovsk Amur and one for Yaroslavl Locomotiv before returning to join Trenton.
