Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators used 20 saves from goaltender Sean Fields and goals from Mike Stathopoulos and Brad Schell to knock off the Columbia Inferno 2-1 on Tuesday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Brad Schell found a rebound in the slot and beat Columbia netminder Rob McVicar over the shoulder with a slap shot to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead with just 7 seconds left in the opening period. Libor Ustrnul picked up his first assist as a Gladiator on the play. Joe Bourne also picked up an assist on the power play tally.
The Gladiators took a 2-0 lead on Mike Stathopoulos' 10th goal of the season. Defenseman Randy Dagenais jumped into the play creating an odd-man rush and picking up an assist as he dished the puck off to Stathopoulos. Alex Sawruk also picked up an assist with Dagenais on the play.
The Inferno put themselves back in the game midway through the second period with Eric Boulton scored at the 10:49 mark, closing the gap to 2-1. Chanse Fitzpatrick and Derek Eastman assisted on the goal.
Even though Columbia more than doubled its shot total in the third period, taking 11 shots, Gwinnett was able to keep the Inferno at bay and hold on for the 2-1 win.
Columbia goaltender Rob McVicar stopped 32 shots in the contest while Gwinnett's Sean Fields tallied 20 saves and improved his record to 14-6-2.
This was the sixth meeting between the Inferno and the Gladiators this season with the series deadlocked at 3-3. The teams will meet one more time this season, March 20 in Gwinnett.
The Central Division Champion Gwinnett Gladiators continue their second season at The Arena at Gwinnett Center on Friday, March 11th at 7:35 p.m. against the Louisiana Ice Gators.
Friday night is also "Jersey off our Backs" Night as the Gladiators will be wearing special Turn-Back-the-Clock tie-dyed jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game with proceeds going to the Gladiators Foundation for Kids. The Gladiators offer several ticket packages for different needs as well as group outings, suites and birthday parties. For more information call 770-497-5100 or log on to www.gwinnettgladiators.com.
