Garrow Traded To Mississippi for speedy centerman

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Gulls have traded defenseman Mike Garrow to the Mississippi Sea Wolves in exchange for center Nicolas Corbeil and traded Scott Borders' rights to the Las Vegas Wranglers, head coach Martin St. Amour announced Tuesday.

Corbeil, who will turn 22 on March 30, has recorded 39 points (13g, 26a) and 58 penalty minutes in 53 games for Mississippi this season. He also represented the Sea Wolves at the 2005 ECHL All-Star Game, which took place in late January.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 185-pound native of Boisbriand, Quebec began his professional career last season for the ECHL's Florence (now named Pee Dee) Pride. In 31 games for Florence, Corbeil netted 24 points (9g, 15a) and amassed 18 penalty minutes. He also appeared in one game last season for the American Hockey League's Norfolk Admirals.

Prior to turning pro, Corbeil played parts of five seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Sherbrooke Beavers and Cape-Breton Screaming Eagles. Corbeil was a third round draft pick (88th pick overall) of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He will wear No. 84 and is scheduled to be in the San Diego lineup Friday in Long Beach.

Garrow, 29, appeared in 46 games for the Gulls this season, notching 29 points (8g, 21a) and 34 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-1-inch, 210-pounder from Kenora, Ontario began his stint with San Diego in 2002-03, its last season in the now-defunct West Coast Hockey League. In 163 career games with the Blue and Orange, Garrow registered 103 points (31g, 72a), which is seventh best all-time among Gulls blue liners.

Borders, 23, scored 10 points (7g, 3a) and racked up 61 penalty minutes in 41 games for San Diego this season. The 6-foot-2-inch, 212-pound native of Bonnyville, Alberta spent the previous two-plus seasons with the Fresno Falcons. He was named to the WCHL's All-Rookie Team in 2002-03 and helped Fresno to the 2002 WCHL championship.

San Diego goes back on the road for a brief two-game trip before opening a five-game homestand. The Gulls will in Long Beach Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Las Vegas Saturday, March 12 at 7:05 p.m. They return home Sunday, March 13 to face the red-hot Alaska Aces. Game time is set for 5:05 p.m. and it will be Education and Kids Night, featuring "Skate with the Gulls" immediately following the contest.
