Storm Involved In Seven Player Deal
March 8, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, Ohio) The Toledo Storm of the ECHL announced today that they have traded forwards Sam Paolini, Maris Ziedins, Tyler Knight, and defenseman Jason Jozsa to the Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL in exchange for forwards Carl Mallette, Kevin Bergin, and defenseman Joey Martin. Bios on all three players follow this release.
Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Nick Vitucci said of the deal, "This is a deal done to improve our team for a run to the playoffs. As with any deal, it is always tough to part with players who have been here all year. Mallette gives us a terrific scorer and a natural center while Bergin adds scoring and toughness. Joey Martin is a first year pro that brings toughness from a defensive defenseman." Storm Assistant Coach Tony MacAulay, who coached both Mallette and Bergin last season, added, "These three players are new keys to the playoff puzzle. All three give us a new look and add immediate help and depth to our roster. With six teams vying for four spots every team right now is looking to improve."
Mallette (MAH-leht) is second among active scorers in the ECHL with 65 points (24-41). Carl played 23 games last season for Tony MacAulay while in Roanoke and had 14 goals and 16 assists. Combining those numbers with what he did in Florida, Mallette had 71 points as a rookie in the ECHL. In Toledo, Carl will join former teammates Pierre Luc-Sleigher and Robert Snowball, as they all were part of the 2001-02 Victoriaville Tigres of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Bergin (BER-gihn) is in his fourth professional season. Kevin has 13 goals and 26 assists in 56 games with the Grrrowl this season. Bergin played last season for Tony MacAulay, who switched Kevin from defense to forward. While playing as a forward, Bergin has collected 228 penalty minutes.
Martin, the first year professional from the University of Minnesota, has played in 30 games with Greenville this season. Joey has 1 assist and 34 penalty minutes this season. Martin was a member of back-to-back National Champions at the University of Minnesota (2002-2003).
Paolini heads to the Grrrowl after collecting 13 goals, 32 assists and 45 points in 54 games with the Storm this season. Sam has served as the team captain since December 15th. Tyler Knight, the former BGSU Falcon, scored 20 goals and added 15 assists in 53 games with the Storm. Jason Jozsa, in his second year with Toledo, originally came to the Storm via a trade with Greenville prior to the 2003-04 season. Jason tallied 3 goals and 6 assists in 57 Storm contests. Maris Ziedins had 16 goals, 17 assists for 33 points. Four of his goals came on the power play.
The Toledo Storm return home Friday March 11th against the Peoria Rivermen. Detroit Red Wing Darren McCarty and his band "Grinder" will play a post-game concert that night. Toledo Hockey...A History of Champions!
