Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC â The Charlotte Checkers defeated the Pee Dee Pride 4-2 in front of a crowd of 2,710, and extended their win streak to four games.
In what is becoming a trademark, the Checkers struck first as Eddie Pershin put a pass from Bogdan Rudenko past Pee Dee goalie Nick Boucher at 4:50 in the first period. The goal was Pershin's 22nd of the season. The period ended 1-0 in favor of the Checkers who are 21-3-1 this season when leading after the first.
The power dimmed in Cricket Arena as the Checkers lit up the scoreboard in the second. Recently activated off the IR, Rory Rawlyk started the onslaught at 3:35 into the period when we took a Dusty Jamieson pass and lit the lamp from the face-off circle. At 13:01 and up 2-0, Brian Escobedo fed Jason Dawe in front of the net. Boucher blocked Dawe's shot but Ryan Lang hammered home the deflection to extend the Checkers lead 3-0. The goal kept Lang's goal streak alive at five games and counting. Hungry for the one that got away, Dawe put the puck between the pipes from 15 feet out at 15:26 in the second for the unassisted score. The Checkers finished up the period 4-0. Charlotte is 20-1-1 when leading after the second period.
The Pride launched a comeback at the opening of the third period when Pee Dee's Greg Johnson skirted one past Alex Westlund at 1:02 to make the score 4-1. The Pride's Steve Cygan made the score 4-2 when he found the back of the Charlotte net at 7:20 in the third. With strong defense and Goalie of the Week, Alex Westlund, the Checkers kept the Pride from getting any closer.
The Checkers next home game is Friday, March 11 versus the Greenville Grrrowl at 7 p.m. After the game, fans are invited to stay for a Christian rock concert with headliners FFH, also featuring Matthew West and Anthony Evans.
