Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (Nov. 5th) - Greg Chase scored 2:34 into overtime and Wichita grabbed a 5-4 victory against Utah on Sunday afternoon at INTRUST Bank Arena.
Chase led the way with two goals while Istvan Sofron, Guillaume Lepine and Travis Brown all scored their first of the season.
Utah took an early lead as C.J. Eick slid a no-look backhand through Shane Starrett at 6:53. Sofron tied the game at 9:55 off a face-off win from Travis Ewanyk and put a wrist shot through Kevin Carr. His goal led to four-unanswered for the Thunder offense as Lepine made it 2-1 with 1:30 in the first. He caught a pass across the blue line from Marc-Olivier Crevier-Morin and buried a wrist shot to the far side.
Brown made it 3-1 just two minutes into the second. He fired a wrist shot from the edge of the left circle that beat Carr to the glove side. At 13:44, the Thunder added a power play goal from Chase that made it 4-1. He found a loose puck through the slot and fired it off the post for his first of the year.
The Grizzlies made a frantic comeback in the third period, scoring three times to tie the game. Mitch Jones started the rally with a goal at 2:04 to cut the lead to two. Zach Saar scored at 8:14 as he came through the middle of the ice and beat Starrett. With eight minutes left, Michael Pelech tied the game with assists to Kyle Thomas and Ryan Misiak and the game headed into overtime.
Wichita dominated the scoring chances in the extra period. Matt DeBlouw almost ended it in the first minute as he went up the left wing, but Carr made the save. Chase netted his second of the night at 2:34 from almost the same spot he scored his first tally and won the game for the Thunder, 5-4.
Wichita improves to 2-0 in overtime with both wins coming at INTRUST Bank Arena. 12 different players found the scoresheet. Chase (2g) and Mark MacMillan (2a) each had two points. Kyle Platzer added an assist, giving him points in all nine games. Starrett earns his fifth win of the season, stopping 24 of 28 shots. Carr suffers his first overtime loss of the year, stopping 34 of 39 shots he faced.
Wichita went 1-for-4 on the power play. Allen was 0-for-4 on the man advantage.
The Thunder resumes play next week with a pair of games in Independence, Missouri against the Kansas City Mavericks beginning on Friday.
