Manchester Monarchs News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Manchester Monarchs couldn't make a two-goal first period lead hold up, and fell to the Norfolk Admirals in overtime, 4-3, Saturday night at Scope Arena.
The Monarchs (5-3-1-1) couldn't complete the three-game sweep of the Admirals (3-7-0-0), but come away with five points over the weekend.
Manchester got on the board early in this one, as Jordan Smotherman netted his 5th goal of the season at 2:46 of the first period. While skating 4-on-4, Smotherman took a pass from Tony Turgeon in the high slot, and sent a wrister past the blocker of Admirals goaltender, Jamie Murray, to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs added to their lead when Cory Ward scored his 4th goal of the season at 5:20 of the first period. Ward tried to connect with Francois Beauchemin while on a 2-on-1, but his pass was blocked back to his stick where he had nothing but nylon in front of him to double the Monarchs advantage, 2-0.
Norfolk cut into the Manchester lead when Michael Young scored his 1st goal of the season while on a delayed penalty call. With six skaters on the ice, Young found the puck on his stick in the high slot, where sent a wrister through traffic and over the glove of Monarchs goaltender, Charles Williams, to make it a 2-1 game at 13:58 of the first period.
It didn't take the Monarchs much time to regain their two-goal lead, when Zac Lynch scored his 3rd goal of the season just :29 seconds after the Young tally. Smotherman sent Lynch on a clean breakaway with a high chip out of the Manchester zone, and Lynch made no mistake, tucking the puck around the left leg of Murray after a backhand-to-forehand move, to make the score, 3-1, Manchester.
The Admirals made it a one-goal game when Thomas Schutt scored his 2nd goal of the season at 16:08. Schutt created a turnover in the neutral zone while the Monarchs were on the power play and raced into the Monarchs zone on a partial breakaway. Schutt then slammed on the brakes to let a sliding Johnathan Racine pass, and made a quick forehand-to-backhand move that beat the blocker of Williams, to make it a 3-2 game.
Norfolk tied the game, 3-3, when Grant Besse scored his 4th goal of the season at 5:56 of the third period. While skating on a 5-on-3 power play, Besse redirected a Young pass at the top of the blue paint, and chipped the puck high into the net to square the game.
The Admirals comeback was made complete when Angelo Miceli scored his 4th goal of the season at 3:21 of overtime. Williams misplayed the puck behind his own goal where Miceli stole it and stuffed-home a wrap-around, to give Norfolk their first home win of the season and the two points.
The Monarchs are back on the ice Friday, Nov. 10 (7 p.m.), when they host the Jacksonville IceMen for the first time in franchise history at SNHU Arena.
