PETER SCHNEIDER LEAVES WINGS TO PURSUE OPPORTUNITIES OVERSEAS
KALAMAZOO, MI- Kalamazoo Wings forward Peter Schneider has been suspended by the team, as he has chosen to seek hockey opportunities in his native Austria, the team announced Friday. He will be joining the Vienna Capitals of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, the top league in Austria.
Schneider, 26, didn't skip a beat this season after a breakout year in 2016-17. The winger had seven points in five games played for the Wings so far, and he was able maintain a 19-game point streak, which dated back to March 5 of last season.
Schneider was acquired last season via trade from the Florida Everblades, and he poured in 50 points on 20 goals and 30 assists over 51 games with Wings after the transaction. Schneider carried the ECHL's hottest hand during the month of March last season, as he was named ECHL Player of the Month after a 22-point performance in 14 games.
In total, he has appeared in 140 career games with Indy, Florida, and Kalamazoo, and tallied 41 goals and 66 assists for 107 career points.
Prior to turning pro, Schneider was a USHL All-Star with the Indiana Ice (2010-11), and a four-year stand-out at Notre Dame from 2011-15. He was an assistant captain his senior season and was a member of the Fighting Irish's CCHA Championship winning team during the 2012-13 campaign. Schneider has represented his native Austria multiple times on the international stage, including the 2010 World Junior Championships.
In a separate transaction, Michael Garteig has been recalled by the Utica Comets and Dave Desander has been added as an emergency backup goaltender.
