Late Heroics Push Eagles to 4-3 Win in Overtime
November 5, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
BOISE, ID. - Colorado forward Matt Garbowsky scored a goal with just 1:05 remaining in regulation to force overtime and it would be forward Michael Joly who would generate the game-winner in OT to give the Eagles a 4-3 victory over the Idaho Steelheads on Friday. Garbowsky finished the night with a goal and two assists, while goaltender Sam Brittain claimed the win by stopping 38 of the 41 shots thrown his way.
After a scoreless first period, Colorado started the scoring 5:25 into the second period when forward Jake Marchment wrapped around the net and tucked a backhander past Idaho goalie Branden Komm to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Marchment's first as an Eagle, with Garbowsky picking up the assist.
Just minutes later on a 5-on-3 power play, defenseman Matt Register buried a slapshot from the slot to stretch Colorado's lead to 2-0 at the 8:01 mark of the middle frame. Garbowsky and Jake Marto earned the helpers on what was Register's sixth goal of the season.
The advantage would be cut in half when Idaho forward Henrik Samuelsson beat Brittain along the ice on a power play to make it a 2-1 Eagles edge with 3:43 remaining in the second period.
The Steelheads would level the score 59 seconds later when forward Brady Brassart snapped a wrister from the bottom of the left circle into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
Heading into the third period, Idaho would jump on top 3-2 when defenseman Shane Hanna fired a puck through traffic from the blue line to light the lamp and give the Steelheads a 3-2 advantage with 5:45 remaining in regulation.
Colorado would pull Brittain in favor of the extra attacker in the final three minutes of the contest and the move would pay off, as Garbowsky carved across the bottom of the right circle and snapped the puck past Komm to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:05 left in regulation.
Unable to determine a winner in the final minute of regulation, the two teams would head to overtime. A faceoff win by Colorado in the Steelheads zone put the puck on the tape of Joly on top of the crease and he would beat Komm with a flick of the wrist to give Colorado the 4-3 win in overtime. The goal also extended Joly's goal streak to five straight games, while also extending J.C. Beaudin's point streak to six consecutive contests. The Eagles finished the night going 1-for-7 on the power play, while Idaho went 1-for-8 on the man-advantage.
The Eagles conclude their three-game series against the Steelheads when the two teams meet at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho on Saturday, November 4th at 7:10pm MT.
Season tickets for the 2017-18 season are on-sale now and can be reserved with a $100 deposit per seat by calling the Eagles ticket office at 970-686-SHOT (7468).
